ABOUT The Delis
As a third generation New Yorker who moved to London in 2012, I found myself longing for the comforting tastes and familiar hustle of my local bodega. It wasn’t just the food I missed but the entire experience — the friendly banter with Dominik, my deli guy, the aroma of freshly brewed filter coffee and sizzling bacon filling the air while watching the comforting sight of Kiser rolls being stacked in the counter.
London’s culinary landscape is diverse and exciting, yet it lacks that quintessential slice of New York. That’s when the idea hit me: why not bring a piece of the Big Apple to the heart of London? Starting ‘The Delis’ in London isn’t just about replicating recipes; it’s about recreating a culture. Offering more than just food. We’re building a community, a place where everyone feels welcome and at home.
Finding the perfect location was a challenge. After exploring countless neighborhoods, I was introduced to Tom Stanley, who showed me his charming spot on the famous Chiltern Street, an area known for its eclectic mix of cultures and vibrant energy. It was the ideal place to introduce a New York deli. The space has a rustic charm that we knew could be transformed into a cozy, nostalgic haven reminiscent of Manhattan’s classic railroad apartments. Tom believed in the concept, sometimes more than me, and we began our partnership, here on Chiltern Street.
Recreating a brand and culture was and is an adventure in itself. I scoured suppliers to source the finest ingredients, importing key items directly from New York to ensure every bite tasted like home. Our menu was crafted with care, featuring classic bodega sandwiches that I grew up with, gorgeous pastries and desserts from Rockstar Bakers, and bagels that would make any New Yorker proud. We even added a few London twists, blending the best of both culinary worlds to cater to our diverse clientele.
Locals and expats alike stream in, curious and eager to taste the flavors of New York. It wasn’t long before our deli on Chiltern Street became a beloved fixture in the neighborhood, a place where people gathered not just to eat, but to connect and share stories.
Looking back on the journey to bring a New York deli to London was filled with challenges and triumphs. It’s been an incredible ride and everyday we’re grateful to be a part of this vibrant community.
Our deli is more than just a business; it’s a tribute to the city I love and the now city I’ve come to call home. So, come in, grab a seat, a cawffee and let us serve you a taste of New York right here in London.
